How the Field Guide is written.

The Field Guide exists to make Singapore's building rules easier to use. It is only useful if it is right, so these are the rules we hold ourselves to.

Primary sources first

Every regulatory threshold, deadline, penalty, section number and case reference is traced to the source: the statute, the agency (BCA, SCDF, URA, MOM, NEA, PEB, EMA, PUB), the court judgment, or a published professional commentary. Sources are listed at the end of each guide and linked inline, so you can check them yourself.

What we will not do

  • State a number we could not verify. Where a figure could not be confirmed, the guide says so or describes the rule without it.
  • Present an invented story as a real one. Risk scenarios are composites of common patterns and are labelled as such. Real events are cited.
  • Present an assumption as a fact. Worked examples are labelled Illustrative.
  • Name or criticise other firms, or accept payment for mentions.

Dates and changes

Each guide shows the date it was last updated. Rules change. Before relying on a guide for a decision, check the current requirement with the agency or a qualified professional.

Not advice for your project

The guides are general information. They are not legal advice or engineering advice for a specific building. For that, appoint a lawyer or a Professional Engineer who can look at your facts.

Corrections

If you find an error or an outdated rule, email info@rrd.sg with the page and the source. We correct verified errors and update the date on the page.

Reuse

You are welcome to quote and link to the guides in reports, tenders, by-law briefings and training. Each guide has a citation you can copy. Please link to the page so readers get the current version.
